About Beale Street Cafe

At the end of 1998, the South Wedge got a new face - at the corner of South Ave and Gregory Street. The Beale was born. The building which once housed Laws, and a couple of short lived restaurants along the way, became Rochester's first BBQ joint.

Originally naming his restaurant after one of the country's BBQ Mecca's, Beale Street, Terry Bauer was venturing in to the BBQ world. Rochester, a virgin to BBQ restaurants, and the South Wedge, a location which for years struggled to get better, embraced this new restaurant with it's magical combination of great BBQ and a "fun time for all" atmosphere. With good food, good music, and somebody who doesn't quit pushing and growing their ideas, Owner Terry Bauer and his wife Pam - pushed along with slow but steady growth for the first 3 years. The BBQ was great but the restaurant needed something more. At Pam's request; Terry decided to include his love of New Orleans style fun and Cajun cooking to the menu - another first for Rochester.

Well, that was the key to moving on up - Business increased at a steady pace and the rest is history. Owner / Operator Terry Bauer went to Memphis for the world BBQ competition where he and two teammates came in 4th place. His Cajun fare has also received many accolades for the gumbo and jambalaya. It has taken the Rochester's Choice Awards #1 spot in 2007 and 2008 (the first two years that they included Cajun in the choices). In addition, he is always in the paper for his 1st prize chili.

Bauer goes to New Orleans every year for decorations and ideas. Each recipe has been hand picked by Bauer, fine tuned to fit Rochester palates, and served up special each and every time.

As a family oriented business, at one time or another everyone in Bauer's family has worked at The Beale - either on the floor, behind the bar, catering, busing, or doing the dishes. If you have been to The Beale you have probably met Kendra, Tanner, Amber or Caleb. It is these sorts of values within his own family that make Beale Street a family friendly place to be! The menu and atmosphere alike hold a little something for all tastes and ages. Not to mention the kids really love those beads!
